Children's Support Group

We recently launched a support group for our children called Confident Kids. This Christian-based support group offers help for hurting kids and struggling parents.

We meet weekly and address four major topics over the span of 32 weeks:

  • Facing my feelings
  • Living in my family
  • Growing through changes
  • Making wise choices

Children and parents learn how to name their feelings, how to express them in healthy and appropriate ways, how to recognize and lower feeling defenses, and how to use their feelings to know when it's time to ask for help.

The first verse we memorized together was Joshua 1:9 “Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified. Do not be discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Through this curriculum they are introduced to King David, who used music and poetry to express the many feelings he experienced throughout his lifetime.

Each lesson also has a matching parenting curriculum, so the parents are learning the same material alongside their children.

Many thanks to Christ Lutheran Church of Maple Plain for helping us purchase this curriculum.

Mentors and Tutors

Recently purchased skills workbooks are keeping our children's brains sharp over the summer months.

In the past two months, we have added mentors and tutors to our children’s program. Because of the trauma these children have faced, many of them are behind in school. Therefore, mentors and tutors are a much needed component to our program.

Thank you to our new mentors and tutors. The children love and need your one-on-one attention.

We need more mentors and tutors for our children. If you have an interest in this area, we would love to hear from you! To learn more, please contact julie.sexson@thedwellingplaceshelter.org.

Leapfrogs

We are working to increase the learning of our children through technology, as well as tutoring.

Through a generous grant from Open Your Heart to the Hungry and Homeless, we were able to purchase Leapfrogs for each of our young children.

The kids are having fun using their new Leapfrogs (while learning to read and do mathematics along the way).

Thanks to Open Your Heart for equipping our children with modern technology!
